It was on that night that Ripken played in his 2,131st consecutive game, officially breaking the long-standing record held by the great Lou Gehrig.

Ripken went on to play a total of 2,632 consecutive games before voluntarily ending the streak in 1998.

At the end of the 2010 season, only two players maintained active consecutive game streaks – Matt Kemp (204) and Ichiro Suzuki (192).

Relive the memorable night that Ripken broke Gehrig’s record in this video from MLB.com: 9/6/95 – Ripken sets consecutive-games record.

Aberdeen, Md. — After a 90 minute rain delay to start the game, Japan captured the 2011 Cal Ripken World Series crown with a 7-0 shutout victory over the Ohio Valley Regional Champions from Southeastern Lexington, Ky. This is the first time Japan has won the title since the Cal Ripken World Series has been held at the Ripken Youth Baseball Academy, which began in 2003.

Daisuke Sowa started things off for Japan early, singling in the first inning, stealing second, and setting up the first run of the game on a ground rule double off of the bat of teammate Kosuke Nagata. Nagata later scored on a passed ball. Ohio Valley was able to shut down Japan’s offense with a double play to end the half inning with a score of 2-0.

Third baseman Austin Dick had the first hit for Ohio Valley with a single in the first inning. Attempting to advance in to scoring position, Dick stole second base but was caught when trying to steal third. Kaelen Covington then hit a sharp ground ball which was handled by the pitcher, Kosuke Morita, for the final out of the inning.

Japan continued to bring in runs throughout the game by being aggressive on the bases. The team finished with eight stolen bases in the game. Taisei Takeoka led the team from Japan with three steals.

Ohio Valley pitcher Zack Bryant came in to relieve starter CJ Bush in the top of the third. Japan’s Daisuke Sowa singled and advanced to second on a balk by Bryant. Sowa stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly, as Japan finished the third inning up 5-0 over Ohio Valley.

Kazuki Sakurai came in to pitch for Japan in the bottom of the third and struck out Ohio Valley’s Parker McCoy and Ben Wilcoxson. Kainen Bibb made contact but was thrown out at first for a quick three up, three down inning.

Both squads held strong defensively, but Sakurai was too much for Ohio Valley to handle. The reliever for Japan held Ohio Valley hitless over three innings. He allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out eight.

Dick lead offensively for Ohio Valley, going one for two, while starting pitcher Bush took the loss for Southeastern Lexington, Ky.

JAPAN 10 vs. DOMINICAN REPUBLIC 3

Japan defeated the Dominican Republic in the International Championship 10 – 3. Leading the way for Japan was Kasuke Nagata, who had five RBIs on two hits, a triple in the first inning and a double in the fourth. Nagata also recorded the win allowing two runs over two innings.

The Dominican Republic recorded just two hits off Japan’s starting pitcher, Kazuki Sakurai. Sakurai allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out six batters in three innings of work. Oscar Vergez reached base two times and had a single in the fourth inning for the Dominican Republic.

Japan’s manager, Koji Okumura said, “This is a win for all of our host families for hosting us and supporting our team. Our players are in great condition thanks to them and their hospitality. We are very happy to have another game and are excited to play the U.S. Champions tomorrow.”

OHIO VALLEY 10 vs. PACIFIC SOUTHWEST 0

Ohio Valley’s (Southeastern Lexington, Ky.) bats were alive early as they defeated Pacific Southwest (Oahu, Hawaii) 10 – 0. Scoring eight runs in the first three innings, Ohio Valley put the game out of reach early and the game ended after the fourth inning due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Austin Dick hit a two run homerun in the first inning and also threw four scoreless innings on the mound for Ohio Valley. Kaelen Covington, C.J. Bush and Aiden Elias each had RBI singles in the second inning helping Ohio Valley put runs on the board early.

Ohio Valley hit three home runs in the win. The additional home runs came from Parker McCoy in the third inning and Zach Bryant homered in the fourth. Ohio Valley’s Kainen Bibb, Bryant, Dick and McCoy combined for six hits and six RBIs.

“Our slogan at the very first practice was that we were going to work hard to make it to the final game of the U.S. Championship in the Cal Ripken World Series,” said Ohio Valley manager, Donnie Covington. “Now, we are excited to be playing in the championship game on Sunday.”

OTHER NOTABLES

Special guests were on hand to throw the ceremonial first pitch prior to the U.S. Championship game. Former NFL player and 2001 Super Bowl champion with the Baltimore Ravens, O.J. Brigance, and his wife Chanda tossed out the first pitch to Cal Ripken, Jr. and received a $2,500 donation from the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation for their nonprofit organization, the Brigance Brigade. O.J. is battling ALS and the Brigance Brigade’s mission is to assist others living with the disease, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Below are the teams who have advanced to play on Saturday, August 20 in the International and National Championship Games televised on MLB Network.

INTERNATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP, 11:00 AM

Japan vs. Dominican Republic

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP, 2:00 PM

Pacific Southwest (Oahu, Hawaii) vs. Ohio Valley (Southeast Lexington, Ky.)

GAME RECAPS FROM PLAYOFF FRIDAY

Dominican Republic 1 vs. Mexico 0

Dominican Republic pitcher Leudy Santana threw a no-hitter to defeat Mexico, 1-0. Santana struck out 14 batters over 6 innings, allowing just two walks in the win. With the victory, the Dominican Republic became the first team to advance to the international finals scheduled for tomorrow. The loss marks the first time in eight years that Mexico will not be the international representative in the final game.

The lone run of the contest came in the third inning. With two outs and a man on third base, Dominican Republic’s Gilberto Celestino struck out swinging. However, a pass ball on the final strike allowed Celestino to advance. A throw to first base was not in time, and the Dominican Republic to a 1-0 lead as Alejandro Guerrero snuck down the third base line to score.

From there, Santana cruised – striking out the side in the bottom of the inning. He collected his 12th, 13th and 14th strikeout of the game in the final innings to secure the no-hitter. It was the second time this tournament that Santana has struck out 14 hitters in a game.

Maryland State Champions (Charles County, Md.) 5 vs. Ohio Valley (Southeast Lexington, Ky.) 11

An early four-run lead was not enough as the Ohio Valley (Southeast Lexington, Ky.) Regional Champions defeated the Maryland State Champions (Charles County, Md.), 11-5, to advance to the National Championship on Saturday.

Ryan Oglesby sparked Maryland’s offense with an RBI double in the top of the first inning. Back-to-back singles from Dave Larson and Brian Hennessy and fielder’s choice by Jake Hanks, put the Charles County Champs up 4-0 early.

Ohio Valley responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame – the big blast being a two-RBI double from Aidan Elias. The next inning, with the bases loaded, Ohio Valley tacked on two more runs on a sacrifice fly from Austin Dick and a Maryland throwing error.

A solo shot by Maryland’s Bryce Nicolau tied the game at 5-5, but six unanswered runs, including two two-RBI hits from Dick and C.J. Bush, propelled Ohio Valley to the 11-5 win.

Republic of Korea 1 vs. Japan 10

Seiya Etsuda’s grand slam in the bottom of the fifth was enough to help seal Japan’s spot in the next round of play, as they defeated the Republic of Korea, 10-1. Japan will face Dominican Republic in the International finals on Saturday, August 20.

Do Hyun Lee lead Republic of Korea at the plate, going 1-for-2, scored one run and doubled in the second inning. After a two hour and 28 minute rain/lightning delay, Japan ran away with the game when Japan’s Seiya Etsuda hit a grand slam to centerfield, advancing their lead to 9-1 over Republic of Korea.

Japanese pitcher Kazuki Sakurai held Republic of Korea hitless over two innings, allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out four.

Mid-Atlantic (Clifton Park, N.Y.) 1 vs. Pacific Southwest (Oahu, Hawaii) 9

Pacific Southwest was too much to handle, as the head to the National Championship with a 9-1 victory over Mid-Atlantic.

Pacific SW scored early, with two runs in the first. Clifton Park tried to rally, with a solo home run by Kevin Herder, but Pacific Southwest was too much to handle.

Pacific Southwest teammates Kaimana Souza-Paaluhi and Ryne Yamashiro hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the fifth. Yamashiro lead his team offensively and defensively, going 3-for-3 and three RBI’s at the plate; on the mound he pitched a complete game for Pacific Southwest, throwing all sixinnings with three hits, one run and struck out two.

Aberdeen, Md. – Day five of the Cal Ripken World Series (CRWS) marked elimination day for some teams, as the field of 16 narrowed and the semi-finals took shape. Below are the teams who have advanced to the semi-finals on Friday, August 19:

AMERICAN DIVISION
1) Pacific Southwest – Oahu, Hawaii
2) Maryland (Charles County)

NATIONAL DIVISION
1) Ohio Valley (Southeast Lexington, Ky.)
2) Mid-Atlantic (Clifton Park, NY)

INTENATIONAL DIVISION
1) Japan
2) Mexico
3) Dominican Republic
4) Korea

The Pacific Southwest (Oahu, Hawaii) continued their perfect streak as they finished pool play with a 4-0 record to claim the American crown of the Domestic Division and advance to the semi-finals. Japan also remained unbeaten at 5-0 to earn the International Division’s top seed heading into the semi-finals.

The matchup of the day pitted the International Division’s two undefeated teams, Japan and Mexico, both 4-0 heading into the contest. They met in the final game of pool play for the 2011 Cal Ripken World Series. Undefeated and guaranteed a spot in the semi-finals, the teams were playing for seed position in the semi-finals. The game lived up to its hype in a pitcher’s duel that saw Japan record a 2-1 victory.

There are no games scheduled for the CRWS on Thursday, August 18 as that day was built-in as a rain date in case needed. Play resumes on Friday, August 19 with four games to decide the teams that will play in the International and Domestic Championship Games on Saturday, August 20. Those games will air on MLB Network.

WEDNSEDAY, AUGUST 17, GAME RECAPS

Ohio Valley (SE Lexington, Ky.) 3 vs. Southeast (Raleigh, N.C) 1

A strong overall performance from pitcher Austin Dick helped lead Ohio Valley to a 3-1 victory against Southeast. Dick pitched a complete, six inning-game, allowing only five hits and one run, while scoring two of his team’s three runs. Of the 99 pitches he threw, 66 were strikes. Kyle Gensler led the Southeast team, scoring their first and only run in the first inning, as well as recording three strikeouts in two innings pitched.

“Austin’s tremendous innings on the mound definitely kept us in the game; only allowing one run really kept the other team off balance. Austin’s leadership really helped us pull this game out.”
Jason Berge, Coach
Ohio Valley Regional Champions

Dominican Republic 14 vs. Canada 2

With a nine run explosion in the first inning, the Dominican Republic dominated Canada 14-2 in a game called after the third inning due to the 10 Run Rule. Three-run homers scored by Dominican Republic’s Huascar Inoa and Leudy Santana secured the team’s lead. Canada players Hudson MacMillan and Brayden McRae-Unruh led their team offensively with one run each.

Mid-Atlantic (Clifton Park, N.Y.) 11 vs. Midwest Plains (Waite Park, Minn.) 1

Payton Johnson’s hot bat led the Mid-Atlantic Region Champions over Midwest Plains with four RBIs and a three-run home run. A double-play in the bottom of the fourth looked to have clinched the victory for Mid Atlantic, but Midwest Plains refused to go quietly as Michael Petron stole second and then scored on a double by Conner Schoborg. Petron’s run wasn’t enough to rally Midwest Plains as the team’s run in the CRWS came to an end with the 11-1 loss.

“This was a big game for us. We knew going into it that if we won we’d move on to the single elimination round and I’m proud of the fact that we played well enough to get to that point.”
Thomas Huerter, Manager
Middle Atlantic Region Champions

Pacific Northwest (Kennewick, Wash,) 7 vs. New England Region (Hudson, N.H.) 4

The squad from the Pacific Northwest came out strong in their game against New England, stealing home twice in the first inning. Pitcher Dillon Plew held New England to just four runs and recorded 11 strikeouts to help Pacific Northwest claim their 7-4 victory. Neither team, however, advanced to the semi-finals.

“This was a long time coming but it finally came together and we put a game away. We had a tough time after losing to Maryland, the boys had a tough time adjusting, they struggled to do the easy things they know how to do, to play baseball and have fun. We played good baseball to get here and it feels good to bring a win home.”
Jeff Plew, Coach
Pacific Northwest Regional Champions

Pacific Southwest (Oahu, Hawaii) 4 vs. Southwest (Weimer, Tx.) 2

Holding on to their spot as the top-ranked team in the American grouping of the Domestic Division, Pacific Southwest finished pool play undefeated after knocking off the Southwest team, 4-2. Southwest struck first by scoring two runs in the bottom of the first, but would not score again. Micah McNicoll of the Pacific team tied the game in the top of the second with a two-run home run. Ryne Yamashiro and Zach Kon each added an RBI to help give the Pacific Southwest the victory.

Republic Korea 7 vs. Australia 0

The Republic of Korea wasted no time getting on the board in their game against Australia. With two outs in the first inning, Woo Jin An scored to give Korea a 1-0 lead. An also helped his team on the field, pitching 3.2 innings, allowing just three hits while striking out seven. Korea added to their lead in the top of the fourth when Keon Hee Choi scored on a sacrifice fly by Hye Seong Oh. Already ahead 2-0, Korea scored five runs in the top of the sixth to stretch their lead to 7-0. An, Choi and Won Min Park combined for 12 strikeouts through size innings.

Japan 2 vs. Mexico 1

The final game of the evening lived up to its billing as the two undefeated teams in the International Division squared off for the top seed in the International Division. Martin Madrid, the second batter in the lineup for Mexico, put his team on the board in the first inning with a solo home run off the left field foul pole. Madrid helped his cause on the hill by dominating on the mound, throwing a perfect game through 4.1 innings. He got some defensive help in the bottom of the third inning as Mexcio’s center fielder, Gerardo Duarte, recorded all three outs in the field, including a spectacular diving catch to record the inning’s second out. But Madrid’s bid for a perfect game ended in the fourth inning when he committed an error that allowed Japan its first base-runner of the game. That error proved costly as the next batter, Taisei Takeoka, hit a two-run home run over the left field wall to give Mexico a 2-1 lead and the victory.

Aberdeen, Md. – Day four of the Cal Ripken World Series (CRWS) welcomed sunny skies, pitching duels and busy bats. Dominican Republic’s Leudy Santana leads the series with fifteen strikeouts, Maryland’s Brian Hennessy and Japan’s Jin Matsuda lead the series offensively with 7 runs batted in.

After four days of play, Pacific Southwest (Oahu, Hawaii) continues to lead the American Division with a record of 3 – 0. Four of the five teams in the National Division are tied for the top spot with two wins and one loss a piece. Japan and Mexico continue their dominance of the International Division, both having four wins and no loses.

The Cal Ripken World Series continues with seven games scheduled for Wednesday, the final day of pool play. Six of the seven games will have playoff implications on Wednesday.

Australia 9 vs. Canada 4

Strong performances by pitcher Daniel Reid and catcher Sean Rintoul helped take Australia to victory, defeating Canada 9-4. Reid allowed just two hits, no earned runs, and struck out four batters in four innings. Rintoul reached base three times, scored two runs and had one RBI. Canada shortstop Marc Ashford led his team offensively, going 1-for-3 and one run scored. Australia picked up their first tournament win, improving to 1-3, while Canada remains winless at 0-4.

Harford County (Bel Air Braves- Host Team) 0 vs. Midwest Plains (Waite Park, Minnesota) 9

With a seven run explosion in the third inning, the Midwest Plains Regional Champs (Waite Park, Minn.) shut out tournament host’s Harford County, 9-0. Midwest Plains improves to 2-1 during the series, as Harford County is winless at 0-4.

“This was a great team win for us today. We didn’t have one player who stood out more than another and overall, we played good defense.”
John Atkinson
Manager
Midwest Plains Regional Champions

Pacific Southwest (Oahu, Hawaii) 13 vs. Pacific Northwest (Kennewick American All-Stars) 0

Thirteen runs in the first three innings propelled Pacific Southwest to a shutout victory over the Pacific Northwest Regional Champions, 13-0. Ohau’s Nick Benner racked up five RBIs on three hits, including an inside the park home run, while reliever Blaine DeMello recorded the win with two-thirds shutout innings and no hits allowed.

Mexico 4 vs. Republic of Korea 1

Mexico and the Republic of Korea were in a pitching duel until the final inning, with Mexico taking the eventual 4-1 victory. Mexico’s Martin Madrid led the offense, going 2-for-3 with a home run. The Republic of Korea managed just one hit and one earned run off of Mexico pitcher Balta Guzman, who threw a complete game with three strikeouts and two walks. Pitcher Jong Bum Kim also threw a complete game, striking out six batters for Republic of Korea, who fall to 1-3 with one day remaining in CRWS pool play.

Middle Atlantic (Clifton Park, New York) 8 vs. Southeast (West Raleigh, North Carolina) 4

Additionally, reliever Huerter recorded the win for Mid-Atlantic, allowing just one run over two innings and surrendering two hits. Southeast’s Alex Molden had a strong game at the plate, going 2-for-2 with one run scored.

“Since we have arrived in Aberdeen, our bats haven’t won us games. Today, in our third game of the Cal Ripken World Series, our bats came alive. We beat a good team today and are looking forward to our last game of the round robin series.”
Thomas Hunter
Manager
Mid-Atlantic Regional Champions

Dominican Republic 1 vs. Japan 6

Japan continued their dominance within the International Division as they recorded a 6-1 victory over Dominican Republic. Despite Dominican outfielder Henry Pujols’ 3-for3 performance at the plate, Japan’s pitching was too much to handle. Winning pitcher Ryuki Urano struck out two, with two hits and one run scored. Kazuki Sakurai struck out five, one hit and no runs scored in the final two innings of work.

New England (Hudson, New Hampshire) 4 vs. MD State (Charles County Chargers) 3

New England picked up their first win of the series, with a 4-3 win over the Maryland State Champs. Down 3-1 in the fifth, Maryland rallied with a triple by infielder Ryan Oglesby, followed by an RBI double from teammate Bryce Nicolau. Nicolau eventually scored on a passed ball to tie the game at 3-3. New England retook the lead by scoring on a balk, which would be the final score of the game. New England pitcher Dean LaMothe threw a complete game with 10 strikeouts, five hits and three runs scored.

Aberdeen, Md. – Day three of the Cal Ripken World Series (CRWS) began with some make-up games due to heavy rain on Sunday. Despite more rain delays, all games were completed and pool play is back on schedule.

After three days of pool play, Pacific Southwest (Oahu, Hawaii) leads the American Division with a record of 2 – 0. Southeast (West Raleigh, N.C.) also has a 2 – 0 record and leads the National Division. Japan and Mexico are tied for the lead of the International Division, both having three wins and no loses.

The CRWS will resume Monday, Aug. 16 at noon. Seven regularly scheduled international and domestic games will be played throughout the day.

Aberdeen, Md. – On Sunday, heavy rain and thunderstorms continued to batter the Ripken Academy in Aberdeen, MD. Play began at 10am with the continuation of games that were suspended on Saturday, but was abruptly stopped when severe weather returned to the area.

Babe Ruth League officials suspended play until 3:30pm with thunderstorms forming up and down the eastern coast.

After the weather left the area, games resumed, beginning with continuations from Saturday’s suspended games.

As the result of the delayed starts, three of Sunday’s games will be carried over and played on Monday morning at 10am. At 10am, the Dominican Republic takes on Australia on Cal Sr.’s Yard, the Southwest Regional Champs take on the New England Regional Champs on Citizens Park, and the Pacific Northwest Champs play the Maryland State Champions on Nationals Field.

The second day of the Cal Ripken World Series (CRWS) took place at the Ripken Academy in Aberdeen, Md. The day started with the continuation of two suspended games from the night before as a result of rain delays.

Seven regularly scheduled international and domestic games will begin play at noon at the Ripken Academy on Monday.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 14, GAME RECAPS

SUSPENDED GAMES

MD State (Charles County Chargers) 17 vs. Southwest (Texas Tri-Counties) 2

Homeruns from Charles County’s Brant Butler, Bryce Nicolau and Brian Hennessy propelled the Maryland State Champions over the Southwest Regional Champions (Texas Tri-Counties), 17-2. Hennessy’s blast, a grand slam in the fifth inning, sparked a 13-run rally. Maryland’s Matthew Zabiegalski pitched shut-out ball over the final 2.1 innings for the win.

“We were ahead 4-2 last night when the game got called,” said Mike Hanks, Head Coach of Maryland. “We came back out tonight and the bats came around for our guys. Our team is working pretty hard so we should get pretty deep into this tournament. There are some really great teams here — Mid-Atlantic, Ohio Valley, New England, some of the other teams in our bracket and of course you have the international bracket. We should do pretty well moving forward but there are some tough teams out there.”

SUNDAY SCHEDULED GAMES

Australia 1 vs. Mexico 9

Eight runs in the second inning helped Mexico to a 9-1 win over Australia. Jose Olague and Luis Cruz led the team with two hits apiece. Teammate Gibran Guerra provided the only offense in the second half of the rain-delayed game with a solo shot in the fourth inning. On the mound, Cruz allowed one-run over six innings, striking out nine in the win.

Japan 10 vs. Korea 2

Japan scored eight times in the first inning on their way to a 10-2 rout of Korea. Leadoff hitter Masaharu Niwa led the way with 4 hits, and was one of six players to register an RBI. Pitcher Taisei Takeoka earned the win with two scoreless innings pitched. Korea‘s two runs came in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Won Min Park and a wild pitch. Japan has outscored opponents 41-3 in their last two games.

Midwest Plains (Waite Park, MN) 10 vs. Ohio Valley (Southeastern Lexington, KY) 5

An error-filled second inning lifted Midwest Plains over Ohio Valley, 10-5. Waite Park scored seven times in that inning – all of the runs were unearned. For Midwest Plains, the heart of the line up did the damage – led by Camren Dehler, who finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Ohio Valley’s C.J Bush and James Bryant finished with a homerun a piece to pull the deficient with two runs at 7-5, but it was Dehler who stepped up again, pitching three scoreless innings in relief and securing the win.

“We had an up and down game against Regional Southwest,” said John Atkinson, Head Coach of the Midwest Plains Regional Champs, “but we’re enjoying the heck out of Aberdeen, Maryland besides all this rain. We play tomorrow against West Raleigh (South East Regional Champs). We lost to them two years ago and they ended up winning the whole thing so we’re looking forward to that challenge.”

Mexico 8 vs. Canada 0

Gerardo Duarte finished 3-for-4 with two stolen bases to help Mexico to an 8-0 win over Canada. Teammate Gibran Guerra also pitched in with two hits and two RBIs as the Mexican national team scored all eight of their runs in the first three innings. It was all defense from there, headlined by Mexico’s pitcher Rodolfo Diaz, who struck out nine in 5.1 innings for his first win of the tournament.

Harford County 0 vs. Mid-Atlantic (Clifton Park Knights, NY) 10

Pitcher Michael Jeffers threw five innings of one-hit baseball in Mid-Atlantic’s 10-0 win over Harford County. Kevin Huerter and Payton Johnson each finished with two RBIs apiece, as the offense exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to exercise the tournament’s mercy rule.

“We were honored to be in the World Series and getting our first win tonight was the most important thing,” said Thomas Huerter, the Mid-Atlantic Regional Champions Head Coach. “We have not hit the ball well, so to score ten runs in our second game was huge. We needed this win just to stay alive. Now we have two games against two very tough teams and we’re just happy to get this victory against a very good team. Hopefully our bats can get going and we can continue with our solid pitching.”

SUNDAY SUSPENDED GAMES

Suspended games from Sunday will be played at 10am on Monday morning.

Dominican Republic vs. Australia – On Cal Sr.’s Yard

Southwest (Tri-Counties, TX) vs. New England (Hudson, NH) – On Citizens Park

Pacifc Northwest (Waite Park, MN) vs. Maryland State Champs – On Nationals Field
